Inverter vs UPS: the difference is switchover time.

The words are used interchangeably in shops, but they describe two different jobs. A home inverter keeps a house running for hours after a brief gap. A UPS keeps sensitive equipment running with no gap at all.

Our engineering verdict
Most Indian homes need a pure sine wave inverter and a correctly sized battery bank. A UPS on top of that is worth it only for a desk with a desktop PC, a clinic, or a server rack.
The common mistake is buying a large UPS for whole-home backup and discovering it lasts eleven minutes. The other common mistake is running a diagnostic machine off a plain inverter and losing a session on every switchover.
In many offices the right answer is both: an inverter for the building's essential circuit, a small UPS in front of the equipment that cannot blink.
Questions we get asked
Will a home inverter restart my desktop computer?
It can. A 10–20 ms transfer is usually survivable for modern power supplies, but not always. If the machine matters, put a small UPS in front of it and let the inverter carry the rest of the house.
What does VA mean versus watts?
VA is apparent power; watts is real power. Multiply VA by the power factor (typically 0.7–0.8 for inverters) to estimate the watts you can actually run.
Can one machine do both jobs?
Hybrid inverter-UPS units exist and work well for shops and small offices. They trade a little efficiency for a much shorter transfer time.
